Single Upright Monuments for Austin-area cemeteries

Austin families burying in a city cemetery work under some of the most clearly written monument rules in Texas. The Parks and Recreation Department runs five municipal cemeteries, including Austin Memorial Park on Hancock Drive, Oakwood Cemetery on Navasota Street, the city's oldest, dating to 1839, and Evergreen Cemetery in East Austin. Those rules cover stone thickness, height, and who may install a marker, so we read them before we draw anything. Families in Round Rock, Georgetown, Cedar Park, and Pflugerville also use Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Cemetery in Pflugerville, where the office sets its own requirements. Our workshop in San Angelo is about three and a half to four hours west of Travis County. We cut granite, marble, and bronze there and send you a free design proof to approve before any stone is cut. Then we deliver and set the marker. At the city cemeteries, installation also needs written authorization from Cemetery Operations, so we confirm that step with the office first. Call (806) 662-8696 for a custom quote.

Upright monuments are allowed in the City of Austin cemeteries, within limits the city publishes. An upright can be no more than 42 inches tall, granite or marble must be at least four inches thick, and the base can be no wider than 18 inches. That still leaves room for a well-proportioned single tablet at Oakwood, Evergreen, or Austin Memorial Park, with names sandblasted and portraits or emblems laser-engraved into the polished face. At Cook-Walden/Capital Parks in Pflugerville, the office sets its own section rules. We send a free scaled proof from San Angelo before any stone is cut. Call (806) 662-8696 for a custom quote.

Questions, plainly answered

FAQ — single upright monuments in Austin.

How tall can a single upright monument be in an Austin city cemetery?

It depends. The City of Austin caps upright and raised memorials at 42 inches tall, and memorials on cremains or infant spaces at 24 inches tall. We design the tablet and base together so the finished height stays under the limit.

Is a single upright allowed at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks in Pflugerville?

It depends. We found no published marker rule for Cook-Walden/Capital Parks, so the family should confirm the section rules with the cemetery office before ordering. Send us what they tell you and we will draw to it.

Are there size limits for headstones in City of Austin cemeteries?

Yes. The City of Austin's published rules say upright and raised memorials can be no more than 42 inches tall, and the top of a flush memorial cannot sit more than two inches above ground level. Memorials must also be at least 10 inches narrower than the space, and bases can be no wider than 18 inches. We draw every proof inside those limits.

What materials does the City of Austin accept for a grave marker?

It depends. City cemeteries accept granite or marble at least four inches thick, or cast bronze of any thickness. Private cemeteries such as Cook-Walden/Capital Parks in Pflugerville set their own rules, and we found none published, so the family should confirm with that cemetery office.

Who can install a marker at Austin Memorial Park or Oakwood Cemetery?

It depends. City rules allow installation only by a contractor approved by Cemetery Operations, with written authorization secured first. We work through that requirement with you and the office before we schedule delivery from San Angelo.

Can we add a ledger over a grave in an Austin city cemetery?

No. The City of Austin's rules prohibit installing tablets, ledgers, and curbing in its cemeteries, though ones already in place are grandfathered. A flush marker or an upright within the 42-inch limit is the usual alternative.

Are single upright monuments allowed in every cemetery in Austin?

It depends. Some cemeteries, especially newer memorial-park sections, restrict markers to flush bronze or flush granite only. Call the cemetery office in Austin before you order and we will design a single upright that meets the rule of the section you have purchased.

What materials do you offer for a single upright?

It depends. Granite is the most popular for its ability to withstand extreme climates and temperatures; we also offer marble and bronze face panels mounted on a granite tablet. Send us the section your cemetery has approved and we will recommend the material.

What is the difference between a single upright and a companion upright?

It depends. A single upright is sized and lettered for one person on one grave space; a companion upright is wider and lettered for two — typically a couple — across two adjacent spaces. The construction and materials are the same; the difference is the size of the tablet and the layout of the inscription.

Can you add a photograph to a single upright monument?

Yes. We laser-engrave portraits directly into black or dark granite, and we set porcelain photo inlays into lighter stones. Both are weatherproof; the choice is mainly about the look and the photograph you are working from.

How long does a granite single upright last outdoors?

It depends. A granite single upright set on a proper concrete foundation will commonly stay level and unweathered for many decades. The variable is the foundation work, not the stone.

Can I buy a monument from someone other than my funeral home or cemetery?

It depends. Many families choose an independent monument maker, but cemetery rules and installation requirements can vary. Ask your cemetery for its current written requirements and fees before ordering; we can help you review them.

What do I need to know when purchasing a cemetery monument?

It depends. Some cemeteries have restrictions on the monuments they accept, so it is a good idea to check with your cemetery first to find out what guidelines you must follow. You must also know how much you can spend; most styles can be adapted to fit any size budget. From here, you can decide on a monument style that expresses the life of you or your loved one. You can choose from a variety of shapes, sizes, colors, and materials for your memorial. Texas Lonestar Monuments will be happy to help you further customize your monument with text, engravings, and other decorations.

Can you help me order a custom cemetery monument?

Yes. Texas Lonestar Monuments will be glad to help you design a completely custom monument to commemorate your life or that of a loved one. We offer a wide variety of styles, shapes, colors, and materials. Please give us a call for a custom quote.

What materials are used in monuments?

It depends. Granite is the most popular monument material we use today because of its ability to withstand extreme climates and temperatures. Other materials include marble and bronze.

What is the expected cost of a monument?

It depends. The cost of monuments is based on many different factors, including size, material, and accessories. For more information about the cost of monuments, please contact us.

I found it cheaper online. Can you match the price?

It depends. We cannot compare prices without knowing the materials and services included. Send us the written quote and your cemetery details; we will explain what our custom quote includes, from design through installation.

Does MemorialTag open a digital memorial?

Yes. When scanned, MemorialTag opens a digital memorial where you can share photos, videos, voice messages, and written tributes. It lets you preserve and share your loved one's story with family, friends, and future generations — all at no extra cost.
