Cemeteries in Houston

Flat Headstones for Houston-area cemeteries

Houston's cemeteries run from Glenwood Cemetery, laid out in 1871 on Buffalo Bayou as the city's first professionally designed cemetery, to large Dignity Memorial properties like Forest Park Lawndale, Forest Park Westheimer, and Memorial Oaks on the Katy Freeway. Veterans are buried at Houston National Cemetery on Veterans Memorial Drive, where the VA furnishes government headstones and markers. Each has its own approval process. Glenwood, for example, requires written approval of plans before any monument goes up. Our workshop is in San Angelo, about six hours from Harris County, so we plan each Houston delivery carefully and set the marker ourselves. You get a free design proof showing lettering, artwork, and size before any granite, marble, or bronze is cut. Families in Pasadena, Pearland, League City, Conroe, and Sugar Land are welcome too. Call (806) 662-8696 for a custom quote.

Flat headstones are a practical choice across much of Houston, where large lawn cemeteries like Forest Park Lawndale, Forest Park Westheimer, and Memorial Oaks cover a lot of ground. A flush granite marker sits level with the grass and carries a name, dates, and artwork cut into the face. None of those three publishes its marker rules, so the family should confirm the size with the office before ordering. At Glenwood Cemetery, grave marker plans need written approval before setting. At Houston National Cemetery, the VA furnishes the government marker for eligible veterans. We send a free proof from San Angelo and deliver to Harris County. Call (806) 662-8696.

Questions, plainly answered

FAQ — flat headstones in Houston.

Are flat granite headstones accepted at Forest Park Westheimer?

It depends. Forest Park Westheimer does not publish its marker rules online, so the family should confirm size and material with the cemetery office. We will cut the marker to their specification.

Does a flat marker at Glenwood Cemetery need approval?

Yes. Glenwood's rules require plans and specifications for all grave markers, including foundations, to be submitted to the Cemetery Office and approved in writing before installation. Our proof gives you the drawing to submit.

Does the VA provide the headstone at Houston National Cemetery?

Yes. The VA furnishes a government headstone or marker for eligible veterans, with flat markers in granite, marble, and bronze and upright headstones in granite and marble. The VA says the style chosen must be consistent with existing monuments at the place of burial.

Do I need approval before placing a monument at Glenwood Cemetery?

Yes. Glenwood's published rules require plans and specifications covering size, design, material, and finish, including foundations, to be submitted to the Cemetery Office, with written approval secured before erection. We prepare a scaled drawing you can submit.

What are the marker rules at Forest Park and Memorial Oaks?

It depends. We found no published marker rules for Forest Park Lawndale, Forest Park Westheimer, or Memorial Oaks, so the family should confirm size and material with the cemetery office. Send us what they tell you and we will design to it.

Does Texas Lonestar Monuments deliver to Houston?

Yes. Houston is about six hours from our San Angelo workshop, and we deliver and set the monument ourselves. Call (806) 662-8696 to plan the timing.

Can I buy a monument from someone other than my funeral home or cemetery?

It depends. Many families choose an independent monument maker, but cemetery rules and installation requirements can vary. Ask your cemetery for its current written requirements and fees before ordering; we can help you review them.

What do I need to know when purchasing a cemetery monument?

It depends. Some cemeteries have restrictions on the monuments they accept, so it is a good idea to check with your cemetery first to find out what guidelines you must follow. You must also know how much you can spend; most styles can be adapted to fit any size budget. From here, you can decide on a monument style that expresses the life of you or your loved one. You can choose from a variety of shapes, sizes, colors, and materials for your memorial. Texas Lonestar Monuments will be happy to help you further customize your monument with text, engravings, and other decorations.

Can you help me order a custom cemetery monument?

Yes. Texas Lonestar Monuments will be glad to help you design a completely custom monument to commemorate your life or that of a loved one. We offer a wide variety of styles, shapes, colors, and materials. Please give us a call for a custom quote.

What materials are used in monuments?

It depends. Granite is the most popular monument material we use today because of its ability to withstand extreme climates and temperatures. Other materials include marble and bronze.

What is the expected cost of a monument?

It depends. The cost of monuments is based on many different factors, including size, material, and accessories. For more information about the cost of monuments, please contact us.

I found it cheaper online. Can you match the price?

It depends. We cannot compare prices without knowing the materials and services included. Send us the written quote and your cemetery details; we will explain what our custom quote includes, from design through installation.

Does MemorialTag open a digital memorial?

Yes. When scanned, MemorialTag opens a digital memorial where you can share photos, videos, voice messages, and written tributes. It lets you preserve and share your loved one's story with family, friends, and future generations — all at no extra cost.
